The project for the centre André Malraux sets out to solve the anomalies produced in the urban fabric by the great square-shaped Napoleonic barracks in the middle of an open area in the outskirts of the historical city. The proposal highlights the relationships between the existing isolated elements, including the neighbouring 'gendarmerie'. Their roles are defined in connection with the road network and the urban alignments of the surroundings, duly respecting the historical background. The key point in the new layout is constituted by the circular volume of the theatre itself which, set against the middle of the east facade of the barracks, turns on its base and is recognizable in the alignment of the street running north. The starting point consisted in adapting the large square courtyard of the barracks in a wide open-air atrium leading into the theatre. The entrance to the auditorium passing along a glazed connecting walkway from the foyer in the east wing of the old building.
